A: "trite" = overused, not interesting
"a trite observation" = something that has been said a million times before, not an interesting thought
"mundane" = ordinary, quotidian

A: Trite means no longer interesting or effective, worn out, something that’s become common. Trite is often used talking about a word or a phrase.
Banal means boring, not new or interesting, predictable

A: Trite and banal are similar. Both words imply that the subjects they're referring to are cliche. Corny and cheesy are similar in that they both imply that the work is second rate. Hackneyed is similar to cliche but has a bit more attack to it. Ex: The film was a ______ portrayal of the life of the painter Gauguin. If you were to use trite, corny, banal, hackneyed or cheesy to fill in the blank, the meaning of the sentence would basically be the same.
