mainland is the largest part of a country. so the United states is the mainland. but there are islands that are part of our country and have all the same rights and representatives in Congress. they are not mainland. we don't actually use the phrase to describe those islands but that is how the word is meant and used.

It's not that important of a word tbh, it's not really used unless you're talking about like for example maybe in the case of: there are smaller islands surrounding Spain that are still owned by Spain and considered parts of Spain, the people on those islands might refer to the main island of Spain as the "mainland". So it basically it refers to the main island/country/continent of an island/country/continent that also owns other smaller islands/countries etc. This can also refer to countries that politically are part of another country.
Another common usage is "mainland China", as in the PRC (People's Republic of China), the word "mainland" referring to Hong Kong being politically excluded in this case.
Or, for example, I live in Northern Ireland, which is "politically" owned by and ruled by England. -Some- people here would therefore refer to England as the "mainland"
