Вопрос про Английский (американский вариант)
The word 'odd' means 'strange, weird'. But when it comes to 'odds', it means 'difficulty' as in 'against all odds'. Is there any connection between them? Is there anyone who knows sort of etymology behind 'odds'?🧐

It is funny how adding a simple “s” can change the entire meaning of a word in English :D I am not sure of the etymology but I can think of a few other usages for the word “odd”
1. Odd vs. even numbers
Odd numbers: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, etc.
2. In the general region of a particular quantity
Example: She looked younger than her sixty-odd years.
Meaning: you are not sure her exact age, but you know she is somewhere in her sixties. she could be 61, 62, 63, 64
3. Spare or free time
When you’ve got an odd five minutes, could you come to my office?
Meaning: when you have five or so minutes to spare, please meet me.
A phrase a lot of people use: “He/She is the odd one out”
This means there is something about the person that differs from everybody else.

@Bonsoup Thank you so much for letting me know those various usages of odd. It seems like ‘odd’ is more flexible word that I thought.🤓
So odds might be one of those example too, right? So interesting. I can’t really think of a word that has that many different meanings at the same time! Anyways, thanks again for your help!

I think in general, odds will only be used either in terms of difficulty or in terms of probability!!
1. She won against all odds.
2. What are the odds that she will come?
3. She had the odds stacked against her.
I hoped I helped!! :))
