@DirtRally ridiculous is more like “extremely good” or “extremely bad” or can be used instead of “that’s crazy” when describing something.
Ludicrous is used more when something is funny. For example the thought of a 3 year old toddler trying to dunk a basketball, in my opinion, is ludicrous.
Examples (that I could use)
Context: you just lost in the final match of a tournament
“F***, that was ridiculous.” (In this case, unbelievably bad). Quite a common expression.
(Here you could get the same meaning from ludicrous, though the nuance would be a little different, more sarcastic)
(Your crush wants to go on a date with you)
“This is ridiculous, I can’t believe it.” (In this case, unbelievably good)
Ludicrous:
(You hear a joke that makes you laugh a lot) “that’s ludicrous”
You can also use it more aggressively.
(Someone Said they can beat you in a fight) “that’s ludicrous”
You can also use ridiculous when you want to be more aggressive.
You often hear “don’t be ridiculous” ( this is the same as “don’t be stupid/an idiot”)
Nowadays though, I don’t hear people use “ludicrous” that often. They use ridiculous instead. The dictionary meanings may not be the same, but you can use ridiculous instead of ludicrous and people will understand what you mean. But you might get some weird looks if you ludicrous.
In case all the text is confusing and I’m not making sense. The barebones version:
Ridiculous - very good/very bad/ crazy.
Ludicrous - funny/dumb/stupid.

I got it!!
Is ludicrous a term used in particular areas or people?
The reason people turn weird eyes to me is just the frequency of its emergence?

It’s usually used to describe a situation or something that happened. It is possible to call someone ludicrous but to me it sounds weird or unnatural . Usually when used to describe someone it’s in the potential form. For example “Don’t be ludicrous” is describing someone in the potential form.
When used to describe people you’re better off using ridiculous.
And yes, it’s not commonly used. At least I don’t hear it that often. I hear it maybe once a month if at all.

Ah I’m sorry.
I meant is it a regional word or something. But it seems not.

@DirtRally would this be correct Japanese?
普通の言葉けど、珍しく使われます。might as well get a little a little practice in.
If I am wrong, what I tried to say:
It’s a normal word, but not commonly used.
