La phrase « The death of his son is devasting him. » a l'air, à mon avis, que le fils n'est pas déjà mort. Si il a déjà rendu l'âme, on pourrait dire, « The death of his son has devastated him. » (ce qui a l'air que le fils est mort il n'y a pas trop longtemps) ou « The death of his son devastated him. » (ce qui fait sembler que cela s'est passé il y a longtemps).
De plus, au lieu de « He tries to cope...» on pourrait aussi dire « He's trying to cope...». Ceci veut-dire que le père est encore en train d'essayer à se supporter et est un peu plus naturel.
